On the postcard are pictures of all the churches that we visit on our way around the Tinnsjø positioned.

Kvite Kyrkje hat

For all of you who don't feel like knitting a cap, we can now offer you this beautiful cap.

The cap was also designed by Ingrid and has all our beautiful white church around Tinnsjø on it.

The caps are knitted by her with a hand knitting machine and sewn together by hand.

The cap gets a 10 cm wide double edge, so that it is nicely warm over the ears.

The cap is knitted in superwash treated wool and is so washing machines firm and pleasantly soft.

We can offer the cap in two sizes.

M: 52-55 cm

L: 54-58 cm

The caps cost EUR 50 including free colour choice and postage, if you order them here directly.

In summer,  Sandviken Camping in Austbygde will also offer caps in its shop.

to knit it by yourself

Based on the knitting tradition in Norway, I designed my own “Kvite Kyrkje” cap. The cap is knitted in double knitting technique and can therefore be worn on both sides and is particularly nicely warm. Of course, who would like to put the cap into “normal” pattern knit. The instructions, however, contain an exact explanation of double knitting. The required wool has a length of approximately 175 m and a stitch sample of 27 stitches to 10 cm. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help you.

The guide costs EUR 4, in favour of the “deaconial selection” which is responsible for the pilgrimage.

The instructions will be sent as PDF.

Kvite Kyrkjer "Krympekopp"

For all those who walked the entire route around the Tinnsjø, har Tine Spuur designed a “krympekopp” and made by hand.

Tine has a master’s degree in Holzarbeid and she designed the Kopp especially for our white church project. It describes the thought and the way the kopp was made as follows:

“Krympeboksen or kopp” (crympe means shrinking) are made of fresh birch with a cherry lid.

The principle is to produce a tube made of fresh birch, wherein a groove is milled and a floor fits in. When the fresh birch dries, it contractes and is so very durable connected to the soil. The lid is then manufactured when the boks is dry.

The following ideas are at the heart of the development:

If you go these walks and you get in direct contact with nature, culture, with each other and yourself, it’s good if this piece reminds us of it. It also comes directly from nature in Tinn, (all trees grow in Atrå, their homeland) and they were made with their hands in ancient tradition. The Krympekopp were oiled with walnut oil and so you can use them as a box or as a cup on the next tour.

The limited Krumpekopp were specially made for the last joint pilgrimage and are to be ordered for 480 NOK/about EUR 48.

Pilgrim bag

The bag is attached directly to the belt or belt loops with the carabiner hooks.

On it are all our white churches, in the forms so typical of them and in different forms that you will visit on your pilgrimage.

They offer space for the pilgrim guide and the mobile phone, so that you can always have both at hand.

You can buy the bags for NOK 600 at the Sandviken campsite or order directly from me (including shipping) for EUR 60. Just send me a message and tell me what color you'd like. (there are more colors to choose from)

Tablet voven tapes

the technology

Tablet weaving is a very simple and old weaving technique, which has a long tradition in Norway and especially here in Tinn. These bands are mainly used as a hairband or belt to the East Telemark Bunad. The technique got its name from the thin boards used. They have a hole in every corner through which the threads are pulled. By turning the boards forward or backwards to a quarter turn, then the pattern is created. The weft thread is not visible in the technique, the pattern arises solely from the warp threads which are rotated alternately upwards. There are patterns such as the old Telemark patterns and also our white church patterns that are only turned forward (or backwards if, for example, the churches should be upside down), then there are patterns that are all rotated together forward or backward in a certain order, and the complicated patterns in which single cards are turned forward and backward. Such patterns require a proper portion of concentration and patience. Another point that influences the pattern is the direction in which the threads are pulled through the boards. They then come either a right or left pinnacle, which I used for the sloping roofs of the churches.

With the patterns so typical of the Telemark, the threads are pulled in alternately left and right and thus the impression of a knitted stitch is created. The belt of the telemark costume is woven with up to 134 boards, i.e. 536 threads. For such belts it takes already a few hours of patience and concentration to pull the threads through the boards according to the pattern.

Otherwise, this technique is in principle easy to learn and does not require expensive equipment, which I find particularly interesting. I've put together some pictures of tablet weaving for you to get an impression of it. The descriptions of the individual images come when you enlarge them by clicking.

Kvite Kyrkjer sweater

Do you want to knit a “Kvite Kyrkjer” sweater? We designed a raglan sweater with all 6 white churches on it.

The sweater is embroidered on a piece from the bottom to the top. The borders are worked as a two-tone pattern, while the churches and the trees are embroidered in stitch stitch at the end. So you don't have to be a knit master to get that.  Very nice also with only one church embroidered on it.

You can buy the instructions from Ravelry and download it immediately and then come in Norwegian and German. I can help you with the translation :-)
